Planting and Growing Vegetable Gardens

A vegetable garden can be created in any back yard. A store-bought vegetable is never quite as delicious as one grown in your own soil using your own effort and diligence.

It is essential in vegetable growing that the soil is rich and thoroughly fertilized. The plants should be arranged so that the tilling can be done with wheel tools, and where the space will allow it, with larger tools. A garden bed requires time and labor, uses moisture, and often is more trouble and expense than it is worth. However, the satisfaction will make up for this.

The rows of vegetables should be as long and continuous as possible to allow tilling with wheel tools. If you do not desire to grow a full row of any one vegetable, the line may be made up of several types, one following the other. Care should be taken to place together types that have similar requirements. For example, one long row might contain parsnips, carrots, and other roots. One or two long rows containing a dozen kinds of vegetables are usually better than a dozen short rows, each with one type of vegetable.

It is good to place the permanent vegetables, such as rhubarb and asparagus, on one side, where they will not interfere with the plowing or tilling. Annual vegetables should be grown on different parts of the yeard in succeeding years, thus rotating crops. If radish or cabbage maggots or club root become thoroughly established, omit for a year or more the vegetables that are infested.

It is not necessary that the garden contain only vegetables. Flowers may be planted here and there wherever a vacant spot occurs or a plant dies. Such informal and mixed gardens have a personal character that adds greatly to their interest and value. This informal character of the home-garden is popular in many European countries. This is a type of planting that arises from the necessity of making the most of every inch of land. In a Bavarian peasant's garden, I saw on a space about 40 feet by 100 feet in area, a delightful medley of onions, pole beans, peonies, celery, gooseberries, coleus, cabbages, sunflowers, beets, poppies, cucumbers, morning-glories, verbenas, bush beans, stocks, currants, wormwood, parsley, carrots, kale, perennial phlox, nasturtiums, lettuce, and lilies!
